NEWS: Childish Gambino’s “Royalty” mixtape is out!

Childish Gambino - Royalty

Childish Gambino released his latest mixtape – Royalty – on the 4th of July. Considering it was announced in January, it’s been a long wait for fans, but I’m pretty sure most will agree that it was well worth it.

With features from Beck, Schoolboy Q, RZA, Ghostface Killah, Josh Osho, and Tina Fey (it’s as good as it sounds), Royalty wouldn’t have been easy to pull together, but he got there, and now you can get it for free. And yes, that’s a Britney Spears sample with Danny Brown.

Download the mixtape over here, or if for some reason that link is down, here’s a mirror. You can find the tracklist below.

NEWS: Bloc Party announce new album!

Four - Bloc Party

Bloc Party have officially announced details of their fourth album, and it’s called Four! The past few years have been an anxious time for fans. As the band went on hiatus and various members set out to do different things, the fate of the group seemed up in the air. But with a handful of live dates recently set and videos of the band in the studio, this was almost an inevitable announcement.

Four will be released on the 20th of August. You can pre-order it over here, where you have a variety of bundles to choose from. You can also read a post Kele wrote on the album and the past few years over here.

Check out the album trailer below, where you can hear snippets of some songs. Bloc Party’s past three albums have not disappointed. This is exciting!

NEWS: Foo Fighters’ “million-dollar demos” make their way online

Foo Fighters - One By One

The original recordings of Foo Fighters 2002 album, One By One, were put away. Metaphorically chucked out and scrapped. Aside from the significant issues the band were experiencing internally, word is that Dave found them too boring and tame, and manager John Silva thought that the recordings didn’t quite represent the band. Drummer Taylor Hawkins referred to them as the “million-dollar demos”.

Now, a couple of full songs (and apparently some instrumentals) have appeared online from the sessions. Take a listen to the demos of “Come Back” and “Have It All” below! Definitely confused as to why they’d want to scrap the former, which sounds brilliant.

NEWS: Ex-Dananananaykroyd members form Alarm Bells

Alarm Bells

Dananananaykroyd announced that they would be disbanding in September of 2011. The much-loved, energetic, Scottish band won fans over with a type of aggressive, fast, but incredibly playful guitar-rock, and their live shows were lauded over by pretty much everyone.

Now four of the six members in the band’s final formation are coming together to form a new band – Alarm Bells.

John Baillie Jnr, David Roy, Ryan McGinness (ex-Dananananaykroyd), and Paul Bannon (who played with them on their final tour) will be joined by Ollie Cox, and according to their online bio:

They play all-or-nothing ADD freak-outs with guitars, pedals, 35 year old synthesisers and mock grandeur.

Sounds pretty good to me. Check out their Facebook page for a couple of gig dates, and in the absence of any Alarm Bells tracks, take a listen to what everyone fell in love with below.

NEWS: Astronautalis, Justin Vernon, S. Carey, and Ryan Olson start a band

Un-named new band

Astronautalis (genre-bending rapper Andy Bothwell), Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver fame), S. Carey (Sean Carey, known for his work with Bon Iver and his solo output), and Ryan Olson (aka Arson Only, founder of Gayngs, and member of Marijuana Deathsquads) have formed a new band – and tracking for their album is complete already!

I’ve gone all Storify on it below, collecting all of the information I can find so far from each of their Twitter accounts and Facebook, but what can we expect from this new project?

To be honest, I think it’ll be a bit of a surprise to everyone. Carey’s drumming is nothing short of stunning, as I observed when he performed with Bon Iver at the Opera House, and I don’t think there’s much he couldn’t do. Olson’s noisey, experimental work with Marijuana Deathsquads could throw something unexpected into the mix, and Astronautalis’ sophisticated flow is sure to show up. As for Vernon, it’s been confirmed his vocal talents will be making an appearance, but apart from that, who can tell.

All we can know for sure, is that it’s going to be a very interesting collaborative effort from 4 very talented musicians. All they need now is a name!

Check out my Storify piece below for more info, and follow the four of them (Astronautalis seems to be the most frequent updater) on Twitter to keep up with the project.

NEWS/TOUR: Groovin’ The Moo loses Chiddy Bang, gains Ball Park Music

Ball Park Music

Groovin’ The Moo – one of Australia’s most successful, friendly, and fun all-ages festivals – recently lost American hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang to promotional duties in the US. Ball Park Music, Australia’s slightly quirky and heart-warmingly sincere indie six-piece, have taken their place – and based on my own tastes, it’s a bit of a plus.

With Bendigo’s allocation of online tickets already sold out (and the tickets through local outlets being limited), you’d be advised to grab your tickets soon – no matter where you’re planning to attend.

As usual, it’s an incredibly solid line-up. I’m still freaking out at the thought of seeing Dallas Green singing across the University of Canberra Meadows. We’ll get to see:

360, Adrian Lux (SWE), Andrew W.K One-Man-Party Tour (USA), Ball Park Music, Beni, Big Scary, Bluejuice, City and Colour (CAN), Digitalism (GER), The Getaway Plan, Gold Fields, Hermitude, Hilltop Hoods, Kaiser Chiefs (UK), Kimbra, The Maccabees (UK), Matt Corby, Muscles, Mutemath (USA), Naysayer & Gilsun, Parkway Drive, Public Enemy (USA), Purple Sneakers DJs, San Cisco, Wavves (USA) with more local and triple j unearthed artists to be announced!

Groovin’ The Moo will be dropping by Bendigo (May 5), Townsville (May 6), Maitland (May 12), Canberra (May 13), and Bunbury (May 19). Jump over here for tickets and all of the finer details.

NEWS/BRAND NEW: Johnny Foreigner – “(small fraud)”

Johnny Foreigner

It’s been a busy few months for Birmingham punx Johnny Foreigner. Between all of the work put into their latest album – Johnny Foreigner Vs Everything – they’ve played launch shows, released singles and an EP, and visited Japan. But that isn’t going to slow them down one bit.

Recently it was announced that their label, Alcopop, will be releasing a double 12″ vinyl of Vs Everything! The album itself will take up 3 sides of it, while the 4th side will bring together all of the b-sides from the singles. Pre-orders will be available from March, and what’s potentially the most exciting thing about all of this is:

“… the first 100 preorders will recieve a totally unique present and an some instructions on what to do with it. This is going to be most grandiose/stupid interactive art thing we’ve ever done, will tell more soon.”

Jump over here to check out the upcoming gigs they’re playing. They’re kind of redoing their launch parties too, and from what I heard, they’d be well worth getting along to.

On top of all of this, they’ve recently thrown a new track up on SoundCloud called “(small fraud)”. It’s from the Vs Everything album sessions, and it’s a spoken-word piece against a busy, whirring, electronic back-drop. Most bands can’t pull this stuff off, but Alexei’s ability to turn a phrase can’t be rivalled by many, and it kind of works for them.

Take a listen below! And if the SoundCloud downloads are all gone, grab it for free here!
