VIDEO/TOUR: Bluejuice – “On My Own”

Bluejuice

Bluejuice are renowned for having cool video ideas. Anyone who didn’t find “Act Yr Age” hilarious should probably chill out a bit, and “Vitriol” will forever be a stellar example of doing budget film-clips right.

“On My Own” continues that tradition. It’s a karaoke video that looks like it was ripped from an old VHS, and they really nail the cheesy aesthetic. The song isn’t bad either. Check it out below.

Bluejuice are also hitting the road with The Cairos and Loon Lake (except in Brisbane). Check out the details!

VIDEO: 360 – “Hope You Don’t Mind Ft N’Fa”

360

If there’s one thing you can’t deny, it’s that 360 has been working hard lately.

I don’t care about all the flack he’s getting from “hardcore” hip-hop heads. From all the people who like his older stuff more, or think he’s “sold out” (“OH NO, A MUSICIAN EARNING MONEY!”, they cry).

Even they have to hand it to him – the guy puts in the miles. Between competing regularly in battles, doing signings, and getting ready to work on his next album, he decided to do a proper video for everyone today. And unless it was planned in advance – which I doubt – he did it on the spot.

At 3.42pm on Facebook, 360 announced that he was going to do a video for “Hope You Don’t Mind Ft N’Fa”, and that it’d all be in one take.

At 9.05pm on Facebook, he delivered the clip.

Take a look below. It was done with the one and only Kane Hibberd – who has done stellar photography for countless Australian and international artists! So it’s no wonder it looks great.

VIDEO: Los Campesinos! – “Songs About Your Girlfriend”

Los Campesinos! - "Songs About Your Girlfriend"

It may not be my favourite track from Hello Sadness, but it’s undeniable that “Songs About Your Girlfriend” was the perfect choice for the next single. It has a brilliant guitar hook, a shout-along chorus, and is the stereotypical 3.5 minute length for a single.

The video is one of their best as well. It does a great job of creating that seedy nightclub atmosphere, and the band look really quite professional in it. Let’s be honest though – Tom’s mask is a piece of art. That creepy smile adds a small dab of humour to make it all work. Kudos to director David Spearing (and the others who worked on it!) for doing such an excellent job.

And of course, the band decided to release it on Valentine’s Day – the cheek! Check it out below.

VIDEO: The Dodos – “Good”

Californian indie duo The Dodos have just released their new clip for “Good”, from their latest album No Color. It’s one of the most interesting albums I’ve heard this year, and the video is a very cool take on the traditional “band playing their instruments together” clip. The Dodos really bring credit back to the idea of a duo (even if they do play live with an extra member), and it’s refreshing to be reminded once again (thanks Japandroids) that two people can create some brilliant music without a full band behind them.

Check it out over here at Pitchfork!

VIDEO: Evidence – “Same Folks feat. Fashawn”

It’s undeniable that Rhymesayers artists have not only taken up a significant amount of my listening time over the past year, but that they’ve furthered both my notions of hip-hop and music in general – for which I am very thankful. It wasn’t all that long ago that I was completely dismissive of hip-hop. I thought it was all terrible. Since then, artists like P.O.S., Atmosphere, and most recently, Grieves, have shown me that such views were more than unjustified – they were just plain wrong.

So it makes sense that I’ve been keeping an ear out for new material from anyone on the Rhymesayers roster, because so far they’ve failed to disappoint. Evidence’s latest track continues that tradition, with bright, summery brass hooks and a great beat behind it, and it’s only getting me more excited for his sophomore record Cats & Dogs, which is set for release on the 27th of September.

Take a look below, and if you want, you can pre-order Cats & Dogs over here from Fifth Element.

VIDEO: Jebediah – “Control”

How this video has so few views, especially after the huge popularity of “She’s Like A Comet”, really astounds me. It’s not a brand new video, but I feel obliged to share it in the hope that a few more people give it a listen. It’s a brilliant song and it deserves a bit more recognition.

Jebediah really manage to balance out the racing rock and poppy bites in this one, and Kevin Mitchell’s voice can change to suit accordingly. They’ve been around for quite a while, and I think they’ve well and truly earnt their place as one of Australia’s best modern rock bands that can consistently deliver good music.

VIDEO: The National – “Exile Vilify”

The National recently held a competition with Valve, the makers of popular puzzle game Portal 2, asking people to make a video clip for their song “Exile Vilify”. “Exile Vilify” was included in the game, and shows that despite High Violet giving The National a huge boost in popularity, they aren’t losing their dark and brooding sound, or their amazing song-writing abilities. The winner of the contest will be receiving a rather nice guitar, signed by the band, and a bunch of other Valve goodies.

Valve made sure to point out that it was very difficult to pick a winner, but after much deliberation and consultation with the band, we now have an official video for the song.

Check out the winning video (directed by C.F. Meister):

You can also see the video that got 1.00000000001th place here, and second place here.

VIDEO: Illy – “Cigarettes (ft. Hue Blanes)”

This video isn’t brand new, but it’s really surprising that it doesn’t have more views! It’s such a strong single, off an album that got a whole heap of attention, and the artistic direction the clip takes is pretty cool too. The video was shot around Melbourne, including at Red Door Sounds in Collingwood and The Corner Hotel in Richmond. It was directed by Andrew Wood of Rockaway Creative.

Illy’s breakthrough album The Chase really threw him into the Aussie hip-hop limelight, and this song is a great example of just how much he deserves that success. That chorus has so much potential for huge moments at gigs and festivals. I can see people waving their lighters already.

VIDEO: Regurgitator – “One Day”

This video really really creeps me out, but also makes me laugh a little bit.

Have you ever had the urge to just go into a room, cut up all these body parts, do a voodoo dance, then watch as the limbs and intestines move across the floor and merge together to form some giant monster thing, which then subsequently eats you, and then you escape by forcing your way out of its stomach? ‘Cause I sure know I have. I get that urge all the time.

This is the first single from their latest album, SuperHappyFuntimesFriends, which I only discovered today that you can download for free! Well, it’s “name your price”, but if you’re a poor uni student such as myself that may equate to “free”. I rationalise it by the fact that I’m gonna go and see them live on Sunday (you should probably check out the tour dates as well – MusicFeeds have them all over here). Anyway: you can get the album here if you want.

BRAND NEW/VIDEO: Phrase’s “Bablyon” and new clip!

Aussie hip-hop artist Phrase just released the video for his new single “Apart”! It’s the first single from his brand new LP Babylon, and features Davey Lane (You Am I guitarist), whose vocal parts bring the whole song together. Even though the clip sees Phrase killing his troublesome piñata brother, the song is about as sunny and bright as they come.

Phrase has also put the whole of Babylon up to stream before it’s released, for those of you interested. Well worth a listen, especially as I’ve got a feeling there’s gonna be a few big ones on this release. triple j would be mad not to throw some of these tracks on high rotation.

You can stream the whole album over here, and grab a free mp3 of “Shut Em Down”, provided you part with an e-mail address.
