NEWS: Childish Gambino’s “Royalty” mixtape is out!

Childish Gambino - Royalty

Childish Gambino released his latest mixtape – Royalty – on the 4th of July. Considering it was announced in January, it’s been a long wait for fans, but I’m pretty sure most will agree that it was well worth it.

With features from Beck, Schoolboy Q, RZA, Ghostface Killah, Josh Osho, and Tina Fey (it’s as good as it sounds), Royalty wouldn’t have been easy to pull together, but he got there, and now you can get it for free. And yes, that’s a Britney Spears sample with Danny Brown.

Download the mixtape over here, or if for some reason that link is down, here’s a mirror. You can find the tracklist below.

BRAND NEW: Los Campesinos! – “Tiptoe Through The True Bits”

Tiptoe Through The True Bits

I’ve been waiting for this all day, and now at 11.20pm, it’s finally here. Los Campesinos! had been hinting at this song’s release on Twitter for a few days now, and the wait was well worth it.

The song’s lyrics seem to allude to the break-up Gareth went through prior to the band jetting off to Spain to record 2011’s Hello Sadness, and mixed with light brass riffs, delicate guitar slides, and a serene dual vocal section – well, it’s as amazing, gut-wrenchingly dark, and poetically beautiful as you’d expect.

It was recorded at the same time Hello Sadness was, but it didn’t quite fit on the album. The band also noted that it’s not a single, but just a free download for everyone. LC! are pretty nice like that.

See the blog post with artwork and lyrics over here, and download the song over here [direct link]. Free music doesn’t get any better than this.

They also have a new, limited edition t-shirt for sale. You might wanna get one.

BRAND NEW: Childish Gambino – “Untitled ft. Nipsey Hussle” [Week 2]

American Chariot by Sam Spratt

Donald Glover is a busy man. Following on from last week’s new track, he’s updated his website with another. This week’s untitled song features Nipsey Hussle, and is produced by Boi-1da. It’s official that this is the second track from his new mixtape, making last weeks’ the first.

Blogs last week reported his first mixtape track as “We Ain’t Them”, and a few have already dubbed this one “Black Faces”. Being one of those people who likes his tracks tagged properly, I asked artist Sam Spratt (the man responsible for the excellent artwork for these tracks!) who said that “The tracks are all Untitled“.

Judging by the download URL <http://childishgambino.com/iamronald/week2/untitled%20(prod.%20Boi-1da).mp3.zip>, we can also assume that we’ll be hearing new tracks on a weekly basis for what could be a while too. And that Donald is changing his name to Ronald. ;)

Read the second note from “Big Ghost”, and download the new track over here – before it gets taken down in place of the next one!

NEWS/BRAND NEW: Johnny Foreigner – “(small fraud)”

Johnny Foreigner

It’s been a busy few months for Birmingham punx Johnny Foreigner. Between all of the work put into their latest album – Johnny Foreigner Vs Everything – they’ve played launch shows, released singles and an EP, and visited Japan. But that isn’t going to slow them down one bit.

Recently it was announced that their label, Alcopop, will be releasing a double 12″ vinyl of Vs Everything! The album itself will take up 3 sides of it, while the 4th side will bring together all of the b-sides from the singles. Pre-orders will be available from March, and what’s potentially the most exciting thing about all of this is:

“… the first 100 preorders will recieve a totally unique present and an some instructions on what to do with it. This is going to be most grandiose/stupid interactive art thing we’ve ever done, will tell more soon.”

Jump over here to check out the upcoming gigs they’re playing. They’re kind of redoing their launch parties too, and from what I heard, they’d be well worth getting along to.

On top of all of this, they’ve recently thrown a new track up on SoundCloud called “(small fraud)”. It’s from the Vs Everything album sessions, and it’s a spoken-word piece against a busy, whirring, electronic back-drop. Most bands can’t pull this stuff off, but Alexei’s ability to turn a phrase can’t be rivalled by many, and it kind of works for them.

Take a listen below! And if the SoundCloud downloads are all gone, grab it for free here!

BRAND NEW: Smiles Again – “Isn’t It Ironic ft. I Forget, Sorry!”

In case you missed before, Sydney based hip-hop collective I Forget, Sorry! have big plans for Christmas Eve.

They’re going to be dropping five free mixtapes, one from each artist, and they’re looking to be pretty good.

Read more about the project over here if you’re interested, but in the meantime, check out this exclusive we’ve got for all of you!

Smiles Again (also from Mind Over Matter) has a track featuring every member from the collective, and it closes his mixtape entitled Fuck I’m Lonely. Not only is it hilarious, but it’s got a great beat driving it. Bit of a language warning on this one, but if you love your hip-hop, this is definitely something you’ll wanna jump on. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for those mixtapes tomorrow as well!

Download it here!

INTERVIEW: Coptic Soldier

Coptic Soldier

I recently sent a few questions across to Coptic Soldier – one of the members of excellent Sydney-based hip-hop collective I Forget, Sorry! I asked him about a very interesting project the guys are throwing together for this festive season…

Hi Luke! Hope all is well. I hear there’ll be five mixtapes from IFS! members dropping for free on Christmas Eve – whose work are we going to get to hear?

You will hear a full mixtape from each member in our camp. That is; Johnny Utah, Mind Over Matter, Phatchance, Smiles Again and myself all releasing a mixtape each – free. :)

How did the idea for the mixtapes come about?

Haha, it’s actually quite funny because Smiles wrote a song on his mixtape about how it all went down. Basically the mixtapes were his idea, however I’ll wait for you to hear the song, because Smiles tells the story there more funnily than I can. Maybe we can get On The Tune a Christmas Eve eve exclusive?

That’d be great! Five mixtapes is quite a lot of music though – are you worried that you could over-saturate listeners with too much new material at once?

It was definitely something we discussed. However as a fan, I love it when artists drop mixtapes in between albums, and I know all of us in I Forget, Sorry! haven’t dropped one in ages… so we are due I think. Besides, as a fan, mixtapes always make me want to hear more from an artist. It’s the artists that drop albums so close together consistently that are the ones who outstay their welcome I feel.

Any chance of a cheeky single including everyone involved in the project?

That song I mentioned earlier on the Smiles Again mixtape has everyone on it, even if they are only brief appearances. :)

Thanks for your time, and good luck with the releases!

Thanks for your support Jeremy, heads like you really help us get the music to the people!

Wondering what all the fuss is about? Check out an IFS! mixtape I put together a while ago – it’s legal and free. Get over here!

Check out a couple of teasers from the mixtapes below!

LEAK!: Johnny Foreigner – Johnny Foreigner Vs Everything

Johnny Foreigner Vs Everything

WONDERING WHY THERE’S A LEAK HERE? Well it’s not real. Check out this to find out what I joined in on.

I’m not normally in the habit of posting leaks at On The Tune, but today is a pretty special day.

Johnny Foreigner’s new album has leaked ahead of it’s November release, and I figured I may as well share it with you. You’re going to just get it somewhere else – may as well share the love, right?

It’s an album full of frenzied guitar jams, and slow-crawl acoustic numbers. If you like JoFo already, this’ll be right up your alley – this is basically the culmination of all of the work and effort they’ve put into past releases, and it shows. Pretty strong contender for Album of the Year if you ask me, provided Los Campesinos! don’t take the cake. 2011 is shaping up pretty nicely.
