NEWS: Childish Gambino’s “Royalty” mixtape is out!

Childish Gambino - Royalty

Childish Gambino released his latest mixtape – Royalty – on the 4th of July. Considering it was announced in January, it’s been a long wait for fans, but I’m pretty sure most will agree that it was well worth it.

With features from Beck, Schoolboy Q, RZA, Ghostface Killah, Josh Osho, and Tina Fey (it’s as good as it sounds), Royalty wouldn’t have been easy to pull together, but he got there, and now you can get it for free. And yes, that’s a Britney Spears sample with Danny Brown.

Download the mixtape over here, or if for some reason that link is down, here’s a mirror. You can find the tracklist below.

BRAND NEW: Childish Gambino – “Silk Pillow ft. Beck” [Week 3]

T R O P H I E S - by Sam Spratt

Gambino is back, again – this time with Beck featuring on a verse!

This is the third track from his upcoming mixtape, and it seems like he’s given it a title himself this time – “Silk Pillow”. The track is still uploaded as “untitled”. Perhaps we’ll get a set of track titles once the full mixtape drops?

In keeping with this mixtape’s trend, it’s a great track, so make sure you grab the free download while you can!

BRAND NEW: Childish Gambino – “Untitled ft. Nipsey Hussle” [Week 2]

American Chariot by Sam Spratt

Donald Glover is a busy man. Following on from last week’s new track, he’s updated his website with another. This week’s untitled song features Nipsey Hussle, and is produced by Boi-1da. It’s official that this is the second track from his new mixtape, making last weeks’ the first.

Blogs last week reported his first mixtape track as “We Ain’t Them”, and a few have already dubbed this one “Black Faces”. Being one of those people who likes his tracks tagged properly, I asked artist Sam Spratt (the man responsible for the excellent artwork for these tracks!) who said that “The tracks are all Untitled“.

Judging by the download URL <http://childishgambino.com/iamronald/week2/untitled%20(prod.%20Boi-1da).mp3.zip>, we can also assume that we’ll be hearing new tracks on a weekly basis for what could be a while too. And that Donald is changing his name to Ronald. ;)

Read the second note from “Big Ghost”, and download the new track over here – before it gets taken down in place of the next one!

VIDEO: Johnny Utah – Us (“Be Us” Mixtape Promo)

Johnny Utah

Aussie hip-hopper Johnny Utah, from the I Forget, Sorry! collective, has been working on a free mixtape of late. Last night we got our first taste of what to expect from the December release. I’ve been keen on some new material from Utah since I reviewed the first EP he worked on, and I’ve got a feeling this is going to be a solid release. All of the IFS! boys have been going from strength to strength lately, and rarely disappoint. Someone tag this guy into Rapper Tag already.

The teaser samples Brother Ali’s track “Us” for those of you wondering.

MIXTAPE: On The Tune Mixtape Vol. 5

On The Tune Mixtape Vol. 5

It’s certainly been a while between mixtapes, but hopefully this is a triumphant return to form! We’ve got something for everyone with this one. Guitar-based songs, softer tracks, a Talking Heads cover, sample-based electronic songs, hip-hop mash-ups, acoustic ditties, and some post-rock to finish everything up.

Plus, it’s all completely legal. I asked every single artist or their management if I could use the tracks. No guilty conscience for anyone involved. It feels nice, doesn’t it?

Enough of my ramblings though. Feel free to peruse this fine tracklisting and download the mixtape at your leisure. Happy listening!

P.S. Cover art is by the incredibly handsome Michael “Sea Monkeys” Forrest.

And don’t forget to like On The Tune on Facebook!

BRAND NEW: soundslikebrisbane

When you think of Australia’s strongest independent scene, the first place that springs to mind is Melbourne. Not only do some great bands come outta there, but the media seem to emphasise Melbourne’s artistic and cultural side, and music plays a large part in that.

soundslikebrisbane are here to buck that view and try to knock Melbourne off its mantle by showing Australia exactly what the Sunshine State has to offer – and let me tell you, it offers quite a lot.

soundslikebrisbane brings some of the city’s indie labels and artists together under one name, and already 17 labels are playing their part (including Plus One Records and Dew Process!), with more to join. Artists like Regurgitator, DZ DEATHRAYS, Mr Maps, and I Heart Hiroshima are currently being represented, and together the collective has released a free sampler to give people a taste of Brisbane’s talent. Featuring the aforementioned artists and more, the sampler really has something for everyone, moving between furious rock, acoustic ballads, and even a jazzy piano instrumental. It does a brilliant job of representing the diversity of Brisbane’s scene.

Particular stand outs are “Her Song” by The Medics, “Sunshine State” by Marialy Pacheco, and “Tennis Party” by Mr Maps, but you should definitely check it out for yourself. It’s free music: you’ve got nothing to lose!

You can view the tracklist, download the tracks individually, or stream them over here. Alternatively, download the whole thing over here (it’s about 80mb, so you know).
